Through the generosity of benefactors Craig and Dolly Foster, the Fr. Hayes Center gym was renovated in July of 2022 and named the Craig and Dolly Foster Gymnasium!
The gym was built in 1963. Prior to the construction of the center, the basketball program used a backboard on a garage in the school yard (that was raised to build the FHC) and games were held at the nearby Stevens Avenue Armory.
The basketball program at the time was run by Coach James Selberg, who began a lengthy, successful coaching career at St. Joseph's Parish School in 1960. Alumni remember him as more than a coach. He was a mentor, who taught them more than basketball skills and sportsmanship. He taught them about values and character that would help them become successful individuals in life. Coach Selberg went on to inspire many boys and girls in his career that spanned almost 3 decades. He coached at Lincoln Middle School, Deering High School, and ended his career at Catherine McAuley High School. Coach Selberg guided many teams to championship wins and received the SMAA Coach of the Year award 1989-1990 and again in 1993. To honor Coach Selberg for his contributions to this school and the Alumni who are grateful for his mentorship, his name has been stenciled at the foul lines of our basketball court.
A small celebration to reveal the court was held on August 25, 2022 and included several alumni basketball players of St. Joseph's Parish School who played on teams led by Coach Selberg, his family, and staff members of St. Brigid School.
On October 20, 2021 alumni from St. Joseph's School visited St. Brigid School! While many things have changed, some things remain the same. Classic, warm wood floors, colorful classrooms, and a feeling of home greeted them as they re-lived memories of their Catholic school days.
In the future, we hope to have more alumni events and we would love to invite you! If you attended or graduated from St. Brigid School, St. Joseph's School, or St. Patrick's School please touch base with us.Keep in Touch
